Here are a few of our students amazing Dot creations.
The 2016 school year is off to a great start. I am excited to share that the Willets Road School is participating in International Dot Day. This day was inspired by the book The Dot, by Peter H. Reynolds. Its a moving message about a young girl who was not confident in her abilities to create Art until her Art teacher encouraged her with one simple gesture and it began with a DOT. So go ahead and make your mark, any mark, you gotta start somewhere!! 8th grade students at The Wheatley School explored Kinetic Art through the form of art called Agamograph created by the Artist Yaacov Agam. An agamograph is art in which the image or design changes or is different depending on where it is being viewed from. This allows the art to be interactive with the viewer and creates a new experience at different angles. In order to create their agamographs, students had to draw two different images, a self portrait and their spirit animal, which they researched. The drawings were created using the grid drawing method and colored in oil pastels. Their drawings were then scanned and printed in color to construct the agamographs. You can learn how to create one here. Take a look at my example of the Spirit Animal Agamographs and a few of the students' agamographs in action in the videos below. Digital Painting on the Drawing Pad iPad AppI had the great opportunity today to present how we use technology in our Art Classes using the iPads at our district Family STEAM Night. The community will learn about how we use the iPads to take photos for reference images, and then use those images in the Drawing Pad App to create digital paintings. Students love the Drawing Pad App because the tools in the App act very similar to how we use them is real life. We can layer colors, add textures, blend and smudge. It is a very fun "new" way of getting kids to understand and practice observational drawing skills. If you happened to stop by our booth please share your work on twitter with #drawingpadapp and #ewsdSTEAMfair.
Motivational Masterpiece MuralOur students were off to a very creative start this school year. We began the year by creating a collaborative Motivational Mosaic Mural to encourage the students to work together. Students each had the opportunity to complete a piece of the Mosaic using analogous colors, and patterns. They did not know what the mural was going to look like until all the pieces were placed in their designated spot on the mural. Fall is Full of ColorLooking forward to sharing more of our students' art work!!
Our 6th graders at Willets Road used the Collage technique to create Mosaic style Art inspired by one of several different Old Master, POP or Contemporary Artists. Students got to pick two artists at random and perform some research to learn about each artist's life and what made their art and creative careers successful. After learning about both artists, students chose one and their favorite work by that artist to recreate the Masterpiece into a collage Mosaic. Students used their iPads to do research, grid their reference images and then proceeded to draw from the grid onto a gridded canvas. After the contour drawing was finished students "colored" it in by gluing colorful, recycled magazine paper to match the Masterpiece. It was a lot of work, and the students also practiced a lot of patience and dedication to finishing them. All students did a fantastic job!! 7th graders explored the art of paper sculpture through Origami, the art of folding paper, in this dynamic Radial Paper Relief Sculpture Project. This project was inspired by another art teacher. Students learned all the basic folds for this project through tutorials on YouTube at their own pace. Students even created video tutorials of origami folds they invented. More on this project can be found here. 5th graders further explored the POP ART Movement by creating paintings of their favorite snacks in the style of Pop Artist Burton Morris. Students began these paintings with observational drawings of their snack items and transformed them into Burton Morris' style by adding energy shards, bright colorful backgrounds and black outlines. I am very proud of the work created by the 5th graders at Willets Road. CONGRATULATIONS! to the Willets Road Art Club. We are so happy and proud to announce that the Willets Road Art Club has been chosen as an award winner in the 6th annual Town of North Hempstead’s Recycled Art Contest in the Group Category for their collage of Rosie the Riveter promoting the environmental message of “We Can Do it! RECYCLE”. ALL of the artists who participated in the Recycled Artwork Contest are invited to a reception to celebrate with their families, faculty and friends and see their work on display in the gallery at the Yes We Can Community Center in Westbury. At this wonderful event, that will take place this Monday, December 8th at 6pm, the Art Club will be presented with certificates of recognition by their councilperson for their achievement. Please see Ms. Gomez if you plan on attending the reception, she looks forward to seeing you there.
See their Work in the post below!!! Yes we Did IT!!!The Willets Road School Art Club took part in the 6th annual Town of North Hempstead Recycled Art Contest this year by creating a Collage of the Iconic image of Rosie the Riveter. This project aimed to send a message that everyone can play an important role in recycling. Students also learned that materials we wouldn't normally think twice about before throwing away can be re-purposed to serve a different use and create wonderful works of art. I am very proud of all the students involved. We invite all to the Recycled Art Contest reception at the Yes We Can Community Center in Westbury on Monday, December 8th at 6pm.
