Our first week back at school was great! I want to thank everyone who helped to make my transition such a delightful one. On the first day of art class at Willets Road we not only spoke about the classroom rules and expectations but we got to talking about all the things that ART is. It was amazing to hear what the kids had to say about what Art is and share examples of things all around us that are influenced by ART. I had them continue the quote, "Art colors life and..." on a leaf for the tree that adorns the outside of my classroom door. They did a fabulous job adding color and life to our ART tree!! I look forward to our creative growth throughout the school year. I would like to welcome back, all of my new students, to school. I look forward to meeting each one of you and getting to know you all through out the school year. We are going to have an amazing year filled with lots of hard work and creativity. So be ready to bring your imagination and leave your fears at home, take risks with your art, try something new and try your best. Sometimes some of the greatest art happens when you least expect it.
This summer the Memory Project portraits created by Junior and Senior artists at JFK HS in Bellmore, NY were delivered to the children in Haiti. Check out their reactions to receiving their beautiful gifts in the video below as well as the photos of the children with the portraits that were made for them. Haiti 2014 from Ben Schumaker on Vimeo. I am excited to announce that this year, our students in AP Art and Drawing & Painting are participating in The Memory Project. Through The Memory Project, a non profit organization, art students create portraits for youth around the world who've been neglected, orphaned, or disadvantaged. It allows our students to use their talents to connect with other children through their art. This year our students created portraits of children from Haiti. Many of our students felt connected to the children they were drawing and worked so hard at completing these beautiful portraits so that the child they were drawing felt special and proud of their gift. It has been such a rewarding experience to share and involve my students with and we look forward to participating again. The portraits are scheduled to be sent to Haiti in June. Pictures and/or video of their delivery will be shared as soon as we receive notice. Trying to save up for College? Need a little extra money for Art Supplies? Don't let your beautiful artwork collect dust!! Expose it to the world & try to gain something extra from it. Here are a few Art Contests I encourage all of my art students to participate in...
