2014 4th Quarter HWK - Mixed Media
Your goal for this Mixed Media project is to create a piece of artwork that utilizes a combination of various mediums and collaged surfaces to create a piece of artwork that shows a variety of color and or textures in a balanced and unified work.
Subject Matter - Choose a subject or theme for this piece that you are interested in exploring or investigating in a drawing/painting. It can be an idea you may be thinking about doing for your AP Concentration or a piece you have had in mind but haven't been able to incorporate it in past projects or you can choose one of the following suggestions below.
•Portraits: Self portrait, Portrait of friend or family member or A child from the Memory Project Click Here for Details.
• Still Life of objects that relate to one another or tie into a central idea/concept/message you wish to communicate in your work. For example, Still life of shiny or reflective objects, your favorite fruits or veggies, drapery, objects that communicate a social/political concern, objects from a specific time in history, things hanging from a string, kitchen utensils, tools, shoes, modern/old technology etc. The possibilities are endless here!
•Landscape: This can be from a photo from your travels, your community, or a place that holds significance to you.
•The Figure: Have a friend model for you and either sketch from life or take photos of interesting angles and view points of the figure. Zoom in close to certain parts of the figure that create interesting compositions. Expressive Feet or Hands.
Reference Images: I encourage you work from life or use your own photos. When taking your own photos make sure you have proper lighting. Use a dramatic light source and don't use a flash. Avoid the SNAPSHOT and take a well thought out photograph see the documents on the diff between a SNAP SHOT and PHOTOGRAPH & 10 guidelines of photography in my Photo 1 page here.

Steps to Follow
STEP 1: Choose a subject matter and gather references or set up a still life to draw from
STEP 2: Sketch a contour of your subject If griding, I suggest you create a grid drawing on a separate newsprint or tracing paper and then transfer it onto your mixed media surface using the carbon transfer method. You May even draw/paint the object on separate paper and collage it into the drawing after.
STEP 3: Compose your mixed media drawing or painting surface by collaging various papers and found materials to draw/paint on top of. I suggest at least three different surfaces. Make sure this surface is balanced. Materials to consider: Newspaper, colored paper, various drawing papers like pastel or charcoal paper,
homework/dittos/class notes, magazine pages, fabric, canvas etc.
STEP 4: Plan out the drawing/painting media or styles you are going to create over each surface. (I suggest at least 3 different ones)
You can experiment with media like: Colored Pencil, Graphite Pencil, Charcoal in all white/black/or both, pen and ink, india ink, water color, oil pastel, chalk pastel, marker, acrylic, oil paint or water color.
You may also experiment with various techniques: Stipple, cross hatch, scribble, loose gestural, realism/detail, scumbling/dry brush painting.
And color-schemes for each new surface. For example, monochromatic, full color, warm/cool colors, neutrals, complementary colors, split complementary, triad.
Once you get started make sure you have fun experimenting with new media and techniques.
